“It’s a wild and wonderful thing to hold a graphic novel in my hands with my characters in it. I don’t read comics much anymore, but every now and then, in a fit of nostalgia, I’ll fall into a graphic novel that rings all my bells. I still really like this art form. It tells a story in its own way, different from a novel or a television show or a song. Because each medium approaches the same story with its own set of strengths, the experience for the reader changes with each iteration.
When we adapted the Wingfeather books into an animated series, there were subtle changes to the storyline that just had to happen. Some purists (I see you out there, and I love you) had good questions about the changes, but as the author, I was glad to see the screenwriters looking at the saga with fresh eyes. It meant we moved a bit closer to the heart of the tale.
So, here again is a fresh adaptation of book 1 of the Wingfeather Saga. Here again is an expression of the story from a new set of storytellers with new eyes. They made a few small changes while honoring the source material, and they did it in a format that thirteen-year-old me would be thrilled about. I confess, there are a few new scenes here—ones that wouldn’t have worked in the books or the animated series—that brought tears to my eyes. I offer my deep thanks to Matt Mikalatos for the adaptation and Alessia Trunfio for the beautiful artwork, both of which will usher a host of readers, both old and new, into a grand adventure.”
