The Man of My House
The new memoir from Layla Taylor
On sale June 8, 2027

In her raw and inspiring memoir, one of the breakout stars of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives reveals her story of surviving abuse in her childhood home and becoming a single mom of two at just twenty-three—and the strength she found to build a life that never felt possible.

Layla Taylor never thought she’d be on TV. In fact, her plan was to be a dental assistant, a steady job that offered benefits and stability, that would serve as the antithesis of her childhood upbringing.

One of her earliest memoirs was of the cops being called to her home, her parents screaming inside, her and her older sister cowering in the bushes as the cops demanded her father come out with his hands up. From there, her parents’ tumultuous relationship didn’t get better amid their divorce as her father's anger at the major life change grew and Layla became a target.

Determined to find a community and sense of stability, Taylor threw herself into schoolwork and activities, though struggled to feel like she belonged, being one of the only Black girls in her class. But through a friend, whose home life appeared picture-perfect, Taylor learned about—and converted—to Mormonism. She thought she’d figured it all out, would be on track to finding a stable, kind husband who shecould build a quiet life with. But an unplanned pregnancy, and unstable relationship, led her to being a single mom of two at just age twenty-three. Like many people of her generation, she turned to social media to find a community, and stumbled upon a group of women in the Salt Lake City area, whose drama and determination would change her life forever.

A narrative about a young woman yearning for the peace she could never find as a child, The Man of My House is an inspirational memoir for anyone who has experienced instability in their childhood home and wondered if things would ever be different. It’s a tale of a young woman discovering her voice, learning to take up space, and deciding to live authentically, no matter what others might say or think.
