Pen America and Stephen King Book Bans
2025 RESEARCH REVEALS STAGGERING, CUMULATIVE TOLL OF BOOK BANS NATIONWIDE
PEN America's latest report, Banned in the USA: The Normalization of Book Banning, found that 6,870 books bans were enacted during the 2024-25 school year, across 23 states and 87 public school districts. Books by authors of color, by LGBTQ+ authors, by women. Books about racism, sexuality, gender, history. PEN America pushes back against censorship and the intolerance and exclusion that undergird it.
Four Frightening Facts About Stephen King’s Banned Books
Most Banned Author of 2024–2025: Stephen King topped the list of banned authors this school year, with over 200 instances of bans across the U.S.
Florida Bans: A staggering 76% of King’s bans happened in Florida, where new censorship laws have fueled widespread removals.
Iconic Titles Targeted: Classics like Carrie (banned 9 times), The Stand (8 times), and The Shining (5 times) have all been pulled from classrooms and libraries since 2021
