Did You Know?

For more than a century, Scouts have lit campfires, earned badges, and learned to be prepared. Now, a new generation of young heroesboys and girls alike—are stepping into a modern-day legend that trades firestarters for dragon flames. The Order of the Dragon Slayer book series encapsulates the spirit of the 60-million-strong Scout Movement worldwide, following the adventures of a band of Scouts in West Virginia.

West Virginia is also home to the Summit Bechtel Reserve (also known as “The Summit”), a unique Scouting facility with an expansive main property spanning more than 10,000 acres. Nestled in the heart of West Virginia, The Summit is not only the permanent home of Scouting America’s National Jamboree, but also a place where Scouts can learn, explore, and push themselves to the limit through high adventure.

The Scout Movement

Scouting is a global youth movement that builds friendships, experiences, and skills for life, shaping young people’s futures as active citizens. More than 500 million young people and adults have joined and experienced the power of Scouting’s non-formal education since its founding in 1907. Since then, the Scout Movement has continued to grow and is now active in 176 National Scout Organizations. Today, over 60 million young people, supported by millions of dedicated volunteers, take part in Scouting activities and events worldwide.

Scouting celebrates inclusion and is open to everyone regardless of gender, age, background, faith, or beliefs. Every Scout is unique, but they find common ground in their shared Scout values.

In the United States, Scouting America offers programs and activities that allow youth to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence, and develop ethics and skills in areas like leadership and citizenship that influence their adult lives.

Scout Oath: On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Scout Mission: The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
